There are as many reasons to blog as there are bloggers. Perhaps you want to satisfy a creative urge. Perhaps you want a source of additional income. Perhaps you want to meet people with interests similar to yours. Etc. Etc.
Whatever your motivation, you’ll find that blogging will help you achieve your aims provided you are prepared to put in the necessary effort to help you acquire the few technical skills that you need to set up your web site. And there are only a few technical skills needed so don’t panic. Nobody could be less technical than I am and I’ll explain what I have done to overcome the fact that I am “technically challenged”.
In my case I had a two main reasons to become a blogger.
First, I retired a few years ago but felt I still had something to contribute. I had spent most of my working life teaching languages and training people to teach languages (English and French). So I set up my own web site (blog) in which I explore what’s involved in learning a second language. You can check it out at Second Language Mentor.
You’ll find it’s very simple but it’s allowed me to continue to help people who are trying to learn another language.
Second, I learnt that a blog was an excellent vehicle to earn an income by means of “affiliate marketing”. It’s just a matter of directing your readers to useful products and services and receiving commissions when they make a purchase. This is a natural extension of your blog because the products and services are ones that are relevant to the subject matter of your blog and that you have recommended in your blog posts.
If you are not sure of whether or not you should start up a blog, it would be worth writing down the sorts of topics you might use as the focus of a blog. Choose ones that particularly interest you. Also, try to imagine what products and services you could recommend that your future readers might benefit from purchasing.
If you decide to explore this further, I’ll explain in future posts what you might do to get started and what sources of information I found useful when I was getting started.
